CETI'S FOUNDER
Prof. Dr. João Luís Silva Carvalho is a medical doctor specializing in Gynecology/Obstetrics, with a subspecialty in Reproductive Medicine and a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine of Porto, obtained with “Unanimous approval with distinction and congratulations”.
Prof. Dr. Silva Carvalho has been University Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Porto, President of the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine, member of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and has been awarded the international “Grant for Fertility Innovation” prize.
The Professor’s clinical activity is currently carried out exclusively in Portugal, although his clinical training has taken on an international dimension, with courses at Spaarne Hospital (Netherlands), Instituto Dexeus (Barcelona) and laparoscopic surgery internships at the Centre for Reproductive Medicine of the Academisch Ziekenhuis-Vrije Universiteit (Brussels).
Our Clinical Team
Professor João Luís Silva Carvalho’s team is made up of 17 doctors, 10 of whom are gynecologists practicing in the field of fertility and 4 embryologists specialized in PMA. The team is organized in a multidisciplinary and integrated way, so that other clinical members support the study of fertility, such as the urology unit for male factors and the emergency medicine unit for support of fertility procedures.

Intrauterine Insemination
A painless, uncomplicated assisted reproduction treatment in which carefully processed sperm is placed directly into the woman's uterus.
In Vitro Fertilization (FIV/ICSI)
Medically assisted reproduction technique involving gamete processing and laboratory fertilization (in vitro).
Oocyte Donation
Egg donation is an act of altruism that can help women or couples realize their dream of having a child who would otherwise be unable to do so, due to a lack of eggs in the woman of the couple.
Sperm and Embryo Donation
Sperm donation is the act of using a third party's sperm to fertilize the female gamete (egg). A couple with fertility problems, or a woman without a partner, can realize their dream of becoming parents.
Fertility Cryopreservation
The process of preserving biological material (gametes, zygotes, cleavage-stage embryos, blastocysts, testicular tissue, ovarian tissue) at extremely low temperatures.
Cryopreserved Embryo Transfer
Cryopreserved embryo transfer cycle. It involves thawing the embryos, preparing the patient's endometrium and transferring the embryos into the uterine cavity.

PORTUGUESE LAW ON PMA
The Portuguese law on Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAP) governs practices and procedures related to assisted reproduction in Portugal.
The maximum age limit for women is 50. There is no upper age limit for male partners.
Donors cannot be considered as the parents of the unborn child.
Women's couples and single women are allowed access to MAP.

Professor Rui Miguelote, a physician at CETI, is the coordinator of the research project entitled “Unraveling the Overlap of Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome with Polycystic Ovarian Morphology: A Comprehensive Cluster Analysis Approach”. This project won the 2024 Clinical Prize awarded by SPMR and presented at the Portuguese Congress of Reproductive Medicine.
