Gives life to hope
“Give life to hope” is the motto of the new national campaign of the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine (SPMR) which aims to raise awareness among the general population about the importance of egg and sperm donation.
The growing demand for infertility treatments has increased significantly in recent years in Portugal and, due to the shortage of donors, the public gamete bank for oocyte donation currently has a waiting list of 33 months.
There is an increasing need to resort to treatments with the donation of male and female gametes, and given this reality, aggravated by the decision of the Constitutional Court in April last year, which put an end to the anonymity of donors, the SPMR considered it its duty to raise public awareness of this problem.
In addition to wanting to educate the population about the problem of infertility and the need to increase the number of potential egg and sperm donors to help create more families in Portugal, the SPMR aims to inform and clarify doubts about the donation process and where to go.
In addition to its presence on the web and social networks, the campaign is also taking action closer to universities, where there is a high number of young people who, from the point of view of reproductive potential, are at the ideal age to become donors.
At CETI you can also donate eggs
In 2012, CETI launched a program to recruit and select oocyte donors. The selection of the donor is a highly selective, careful and rigorous process that takes into account the phenotypic characteristics of the recipient (eye color, hair color/type, height, weight and blood group) in order to be as similar as possible.
From the moment she enters a donation program, the donor undergoes a series of tests to determine whether she is fit to donate and will be monitored by a doctor throughout the process.
Financial compensation
Donation is a voluntary and altruistic process, however, Portuguese law provides for the attribution of a monetary remuneration for any inconvenience directly or indirectly associated with the donation, in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 3 of Article 22 of Law 12/2009, of March 26 and in Order No. 3192/2017 published in the Official Gazette, Series II of 2017-04-17, with the maximum limit corresponding to twice the value of the Social Support Index, currently €871.52.
It should be noted that in the case of female donors who begin the donation process and who, for some reason beyond their control, are unable to complete it, partial compensation corresponding to 40% of the aforementioned amount is granted.
