CETI featured in the Expresso newspaper
With over 20 years of experience in the field of Infertility, CETI – Center for the Study and Treatment of Infertility, focuses on multidisciplinarity, clinical and scientific rigor, the most advanced technology and a personalized approach to establish itself as a reference in the field of reproductive medicine. The Expresso newspaper highlighted CETI as a “reference in the treatment of Infertility” and today, we share this article with you.
CETI recently celebrated 20 years of activity
Founded in 1998 by Professor João Luís Silva Carvalho, this infertility treatment and medically assisted procreation (PMA) center also resulted from the professional differentiation of some Gynecology/Obstetrics specialists who dedicated themselves to the area of human reproduction and the treatment of its dysfunctions, so much so that even today CETI favors a comprehensive approach with regard to Reproductive Medicine.
Treatments are carried out in their most comprehensive forms, including treatments using minimally invasive surgery. Regarding the treatments considered to be state-of-the-art, the renowned ART techniques, CETI has a laboratory equipped to carry out the most complex procedures.
This area is divided into three distinct zones:
- the Andrology laboratory, dedicated to male gametes, sperm;
- another area intended for the conservation of gametes and embryos, particularly in situations of fertility preservation, called the cryopreservation room and also the Embryology laboratory, where female gametes are processed, fertilization is carried out and all monitoring of the embryos is carried out until they are transferred to the uterus.
Personalized medicine
Alongside this multidisciplinarity and rigor in clinical and scientific practice, CETI values the performance of personalized Medicine in which proximity, confidentiality and total trust between doctor and patient prevail, which is essential in view of the physical and psychological stress caused by many situations in this context.
According to the latest published epidemiological data, infertility and subfertility affect approximately 15 to 20% of the world’s population of reproductive age and it is inevitable to conclude that this prevalence may tend to increase, not only due to pathologies that affect reproductive health, but also as a consequence of lifestyle habits and the socioeconomic context adopted in Western societies, namely the postponement of pregnancy to later ages.
In recent years, Portuguese legislation regulating access to ART techniques has undergone profound changes and activity reports published by regulatory bodies reveal that, in Portugal, more and more treatments are being carried out, with more than 1000 births/year being recorded as a result of these techniques.
At CETI, this trend was also evident, which required significant growth of the team which, in addition to its daily professional activity, is concerned with regularly attending meetings and having an active scientific participation, in order to keep up with the development that has been substantial in recent years.
In fact, in 2011, professionals from this clinic were part of the first Portuguese research team to be awarded Merck’s Grant for Fertility Innovation, an award that aims to recognize promising research projects in the area.
Almost a decade later, the motivation remains and every year new projects are developed, not only institutionally, but also in collaboration with universities, research centers, scientific societies and even pharmaceutical companies that, like CETI, promote the sharing and exchange of knowledge, essential in the search for quick and efficient solutions for all those who resort to Reproductive Medicine.
