In the opinion article published on November 1st in Jornal de Notícias, Professor Rui Miguelote states that the Family Doctor, due to his position closer to patients, has an important role in prevention, advice and guidance in the area of infertility.
The article highlights some of the contributions that a family doctor can make in the fight against infertility. In particular, screening and information on the causes of male infertility and how lifestyle (drug use, exposure to chemicals, tobacco and alcohol consumption) affects sperm count parameters.
The Family Doctor is also crucial in raising awareness about the impact of a woman’s age on her fertility and in increasing literacy about the menstrual cycle, the fertile period and the day of ovulation, providing advice to enhance couples’ natural fertility.
Early detection of medical conditions that affect fertility and referral to other specialties is another contribution that the Family Doctor can make in the fight against infertility.
