Uterine polyps are focal proliferations of the endometrium (inner lining of the uterine cavity), benign in the vast majority of cases. Although they may be asymptomatic, the vast majority manifest themselves through abnormal uterine bleeding: blood loss between periods and/or heavy menstrual flow.
Fibroids are benign tumours of the myometrium (uterine muscle) with symptoms that vary according to their location: abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, symptoms of bladder or bowel compression or infertility.
Both can be diagnosed in women of childbearing age by gynecological ultrasound. If they are symptomatic or present a marked distortion of the uterine cavity, they should be surgically removed.
